The Basics

What Is Sermorelin?

Sermorelin is a synthetic peptide that mimics growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), a signal your brain sends to the pituitary gland. It prompts the pituitary to release your own growth hormone, instead of supplying growth hormone directly.

It is different from human growth hormone (HGH), which is growth hormone itself. Sermorelin is given by subcutaneous injection under the guidance of a licensed provider.

Sermorelin at a Glance

  • Type: peptide, GHRH analog
  • How it is given: subcutaneous injection
  • Availability: prescription only, prepared by a licensed pharmacy
  • FDA status: not currently FDA-approved
Know the Facts

Is Sermorelin FDA-Approved?

Short answer: not currently. The brand-name product, Geref, was FDA-approved for diagnostic use and for children with growth failure. Its manufacturer stopped selling it, and in 2013 the FDA determined it was not withdrawn for reasons of safety or effectiveness (Federal Register notice).

Today, sermorelin is available only as a compounded medication prepared by a licensed pharmacy. Compounded drugs are not FDA-approved, which means the FDA does not verify their safety or effectiveness (FDA: Compounding Q&A).

Using sermorelin in adults to support energy, sleep, or body composition is off-label, and research on those goals is limited. Results vary, and sermorelin is not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle or for treatment of a diagnosed condition. Rules for compounded medications can change, so your provider confirms availability when your prescription is written.

Evaluation First

Low Energy or Poor Sleep? Start With the Cause

Fatigue, changes in sleep, and loss of muscle have many possible causes, such as thyroid problems, other hormone changes, sleep disorders, stress, medications, and nutrition. MedlinePlus notes that adults with growth hormone deficiency may have fatigue and reduced muscle mass, but other disorders are much more likely to cause these symptoms (MedlinePlus).

That is why your evaluation comes first. Your provider reviews your symptoms, medications, and history, decides whether lab work is needed, and determines whether sermorelin is appropriate for you.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Sermorelin

What is sermorelin used for?

Sermorelin stimulates the pituitary gland to release growth hormone. Some providers prescribe it off-label for adults with symptoms such as low energy, poor sleep, or changes in body composition, after an evaluation. Research for these uses is limited and results vary.

Is sermorelin FDA-approved?

Not currently. The brand-name product, Geref, was FDA-approved and later discontinued by its manufacturer. Today sermorelin is available only as a compounded medication, and compounded drugs are not FDA-approved.

Is sermorelin the same as HGH?

No. Human growth hormone (HGH) is growth hormone itself. Sermorelin is a peptide that signals your pituitary gland to release your own growth hormone.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes. Sermorelin requires a prescription from a licensed provider after a medical evaluation. Be cautious of any website that offers it without one.

How is sermorelin taken?

It is given by subcutaneous injection, often in the evening, on a schedule your provider defines. You receive instructions on how to inject safely.

What are the side effects?

Side effects can include redness, swelling, or pain at the injection site, headache, facial flushing, and nausea. Contact your provider right away if you notice signs of an allergic reaction.

Will sermorelin help me lose weight?

Sermorelin is not a weight loss medication. If weight loss is your goal, see our GLP-1 weight loss program.

How much does it cost?

Pricing depends on your evaluation and treatment plan. Book a consultation and your provider will discuss costs with you directly. No insurance is required.
